Join our new Tavern Chat
A free, private space for 'hot takes' and discussing breaking news.
Today I’m announcing a brand new addition to my Substack publication: Resistance Rabbit Tavern Chat. This will be the place for ‘hot takes’ and breaking situations that I haven’t had time to turn into full articles yet—and maybe ever will.
This is a conversation space exclusively for subscribers—kind of like a group chat or live hangout. I’ll post questions and updates that come my way, and you can jump into the discussion. For now it’s wide open for all subscribers; if it gets too busy, paid subscribers will get VIP priority.
Inspiration — THE Tavern in Abingdon, Virginia (1779)
The title for the subscriber chat is insprited by my one of my all time favorite taverns and restaurants: THE Tavern in Abingdon, Virginia, founded in 1779. We may not be colonial era revolutionaries, and not able to hang together at The Tavern like them, but thinking about the following figures who likely sat around the Abingdon Tavern talking about regarding the Kings tyranny isn’t a bad frame of mind:
Col. William Campbell – Washington County militia commander, hero of Kings Mountain, key local wartime leader.
Arthur Campbell – Influential western Virginia statesman and militia organizer.
Patrick Henry – Not Abingdon-based, but his influence, family ties, and western involvement made his presence felt in every serious frontier discussion.
Elizabeth Henry Campbell Russell – Patrick Henry’s sister, powerful civic and spiritual force on the frontier.
Col. William Russell – Veteran frontier commander tied to the Clinch settlements.
John Sevier – Overmountain leader and future first Governor of Tennessee, deeply connected to the Holston frontier world.
Isaac Shelby – Kings Mountain hero and future first Governor of Kentucky.
Evan Shelby – Patriarch of the Shelby frontier leadership family.
Joseph Martin – Frontier general, Indian agent, and diplomat of the backcountry.
William Preston – Western Virginia militia and administrative leader.
Thomas Walker – Explorer, surveyor, and shaper of western boundary policy.
Daniel Boone – No longer resident, but absolutely part of the same frontier culture and constantly discussed.
Francis Preston – A rising Southwest Virginia political figure who would soon shape the region’s future.
John Floyd – Surveyor and frontier military leader tied to western expansion.
General Andrew Lewis – The Salem hero of the western frontier; Patriot general and commander at the Battle of Point Pleasant, whose leadership, battlefield experience, and influence made him one of the most respected voices in Virginia’s backcountry world.

Open the app and tap the Chat icon. It looks like two bubbles in the bottom bar, and you’ll see a row for my chat inside.
That’s it! Jump into my thread to say hi, and if you have any issues, check out Substack’s FAQ.
